Taylor Student to Tour with DCI
Taylor High School sophomore Jack Hawkins is set to embark on a remarkable journey as he joins the ranks of Drum Corps International (DCI), a pinnacle achievement for any young musician in the marching band community. With unwavering dedication and passion for music, Jack has earned his place among the elite performers of the world-renowned independent marching band.
Jack’s journey to DCI began two years ago when he first set his sights on the prestigious organization. Determined to turn his dream into reality, Jack wasted no time in saving every penny, driven by his profound desire to become part of the best of the best in the marching band arena.
After months of rigorous preparation and practice, Jack auditioned for DCI last November through a video submission. While many hopefuls strive for a callback, Jack’s exceptional talent and dedication earned him a coveted contract, solidifying his spot in the corps. In January, he proudly signed his contract, marking the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in his musical journey.
Securing a place in DCI comes with its challenges, including a significant financial commitment. Undeterred, Jack sought support from his community, leveraging his passion and determination to raise funds through various channels, including selling chocolate bars and reaching out to local organizations such as Kiwanis, the American Legion Post, and township officials. With the unwavering support of his family and the generosity of his community, Jack successfully fundraised a substantial portion of the required $6,000, ensuring his participation in this unparalleled experience.
For Jack, the opportunity to be part of DCI represents the culmination of years of dedication to his craft. With a deep love for marching band and a commitment to excellence, Jack improved his skills through relentless practice and study, utilizing former DCI videos to refine his technique and elevate his performance to the highest standard.
Superintendent, Dr. Mark Ault expressed his pride in Jack’s accomplishments by stating, “We are in awe of the fact that Jack was chosen to participate in this highly selective group of young musicians from all across the country. He will be a great ambassador for our school and community. He is humble, authentic, and hard-working, all the qualities of a Taylor-Made student. Jack owned the issue of raising the tuition money and diligently worked to obtain the goal. I'm proud too of our community organizations who heard about his unique opportunity and his challenge in finding the tuition money. They were supportive and instrumental (no pun intended) in helping him get to the finish line.”
As Jack prepares to embark on the rigorous tour with DCI, Jack is not phased by the challenges ahead. Rehearsals, lasting over 12 hours a day, six to seven days a week, will test his endurance and dedication as he joins over 180 talented performers from around the world on an 85-day journey across 15 states. Despite the demanding schedule, Jack is eager to showcase his talent and passion for music as he competes alongside his peers in venues spanning from Michigan to Texas and beyond.
A drummer since sixth grade, Jack brings years of experience and skill to his role in the corps. At just sixteen years old, he will stand out as one of the youngest members of this year’s ensemble, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication.
For Jack and his family, this journey is a dream come true. With plans to attend shows across the country, including in Muncie, Indiana, and San Antonio, Texas, Jack’s family will be there every step of the way, cheering him on as he takes the stage in pursuit of his passion.
As Jack prepares to embark on this extraordinary adventure with DCI, Taylor High School and the entire community stand behind him, celebrating his achievements and wishing him the best of luck as he represents Taylor on the national stage.
