Award Categories
Annual awards are selected by a prestigious committee of local educators, business leaders and coaches who evaluate the nominations on behalf of the Association. Award Categories include:
- Inspirational Sportswoman of the Year Award (1) will be presented to a local woman who demonstrates superior athletic achievement, community involvement, and outstanding spirit.
- Coach of the Year Award (2) will be judged by his/her coaching success as well as his/her status as a role model for athletes, community involvement, participation in coaching associations and other related professional organizations, and general pursuit of excellence as a coach and mentor. Two coaches will be selected as winners of Coach of the year from these three categories: college, high school or other (i.e. Youth, open, AAU coach).
- College Sportswoman of the Year Award (6) will be presented to a woman playing at a local college who demonstrates superior athletic achievement. Six nominees from all sports will be chosen.
- High School Sportswoman of the Year Award (10) will be presented to a local high school girl who demonstrates superior athletic achievement. Ten nominees from all sports will be chosen.
- Master's Sportswoman of the Year Award (1) will be presented to a local woman [ages 25 and over] who demonstrates superior athletic achievement, community involvement, and outstanding leadership qualities.
- Senior Sportswoman of the Year Award (1) will be presented to a local woman [ages 50 and over] who demonstrates superior athletic achievement, community involvement, and outstanding leadership qualities.
- The Lauren Hill Courage Award (1) will be presented to a local female or female playing locally, who demonstrates the most courageous performance or “comeback” in sports.
- The Donna deVarona Spirit of Sport Award (1) will be presented to a local person (i.e. coach, administrator, referee) who best demonstrates the ideals in the “true spirit of sport” either as a participant or as a supporter or promoter of girl's and women's sports and fitness.
- Lifetime Service Award (1) will be presented to a local woman who has given many years of support, service, and enthusiasm to girls' and women's sports.
- The Legacy Award (1) will be presented to a local woman who has been an outstanding athlete.
- Special Recognition Award (1) will be given to a local person who has made a significant contribution to women's sports.
- Women's Sports Business Award (1) will be given to a local business who has made a significant contribution to women's sports in our community.
Special Awards - The Mary Jo Huismann Administrator of the Year Award (1) will be given to an administrator of an interscholastic or intercollegiate program who has demonstrated excellence in leadership and service and made significant contributions that enhances and promotes the sports experience for girls and women in our community.
- The Jean Dowell Scholarship for Leadership (1) will be given annually to a currently enrolled high school senior or college female student-athlete who has through extraordinary service or accomplishments, and/or personal courage, demonstrated excellence in leadership, scholarship and service.
