Addyston VFW Provided Student Tutoring Services

Posted on: March 24, 2021
On Tuesday, March 23rd, the Three Rivers Board of Education publicly thanked the Addyston VFW for their partnership for an extended learning opportunity for the students of Three Rivers Elementary who needed assistance with tutoring. With COVID also came the unfortunate loss of instructional time. Knowing that this could cause learning gaps for students, Three Rivers Elementary staff began planning in October for ways to offset the foreseeable need for a tutoring program. Tina Cole and Elementary staff reached out to the Addyston VFW to discuss partnering with them to utilize their facilities for a tutoring location. By October, Craig Tenhundfeld from the VFW had already met with Tina and some staff members to tour their facilities and discuss how they were going to support Three Rivers to move forward with the partnership.

When students were in-person four days a week, the Addyston VFW welcomed approximately forty-five students into a heated building and offered food every Wednesday. When the District had to pivot to remote learning, those forty-five students were supported through the tutoring program three days a week.

As Tina Cole presented the public recognition at the March 23rd Board Meeting, she mentioned how Addyston went above and beyond to "create such a wonderful workspace for students." Dr. Ault presented Craig Tenhundfeld with a certificate of appreciation, mentioning "the idea was fabulous." Prior to the conclusion of the recognition, Dr. Stafford also extended her appreciation on behalf of the Board of Education stating that she was "thankful for the partnership during a year where we need to adapt and figure out ways to offer student services in a creative way." Three Rivers is a close-knit community that rises to any challenges presented. The Addyston VFW is an example of the profound support the community provides to the Three Rivers Local School District and the students.

Three Rivers was excited to return to in-person learning five days a week beginning the week of March 22nd. Although the District hopes to remain in-person, it is helpful to know that organizations like the Addyston VFW are available and ready to support the students when needed.
