Cleves, September 2017 – The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation recently named Rachel Thorman and Nancy Flickinger, both Taylor High School Teachers  in the Three Rivers Local School District, a “Jennings Fellow.” Mrs. Thorman and Mrs. Flickinger are two of thirteen teachers in the southwest Ohio to earn the title in 2017, which was presented at the University of Cincinnati.
This highly regarded distinction honors master teachers in select areas of Ohio each year. Candidates, who have been nominated by their superintendents, participate in the Jennings Educators Institute during the fall. A three part professional development experience, the Institute encourages and supports teachers as they strive to improve their practice. Upon completing the series, participants can earn the designation “Jennings Fellow” by taking an additional step to immediately apply what they have learned. During the next several months, they design, implement, and document lessons incorporating ideas from the Institute under the guidance of university partners. They share the outcome of their work with colleagues at the Jennings Fellows Showcase the following spring. “Since 1959, the Jennings Foundation has recognized teachers who set an example by pursuing and implementing excellent teaching practices,” remarks Dr. Daniel Keenan, the Foundation’s Executive Director. “We honor the Jennings Fellows because they demonstrate a commitment to further develop their own skills, to take action, and to reflect on those practices with their peers. This is what excellent teaching is all about.”
The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation was founded in 1959 to provide a means for greater accomplishment on the part of Ohio’s teachers and students. The Foundation awards grants to teachers, public school districts, and tax exempt organizations that assist public elementary and secondary schools in Ohio and focuses its efforts on two themes: excellent teaching and deep learning.
